We’re often asked about who qualifies for our Disability Family Swim session and what families can expect. In this article our Hydrotherapy Pools Area Manager, Jake, talks about this great family swim session.
What's different about the Disability Family Swim?
"The main difference between the Disability Family Swim and the family swim is the availability of the hoists. We can use these to help both children and adults with limited mobility to access the pool. The sessions also have reduced numbers in the water so it's a much quieter time than the family swim. The sessions have the same great music, sensory lighting, access to floats and toys and of course our lovely warm water!"
Who can use the Disability Family Swim?
“We think our sessions are different from those at some of the larger centres as they're open to families where any member of the family has a disability.
So if a parent has a disability then the whole family is more than welcome to come along. We understand that finding an activity the whole family can enjoy together when one of your family has a disability can be a challenge, and we're proud to offer a safe and friendly environment where the whole family can enjoy some fun time together. Our teams at the hydrotherapy pools are experienced in dealing with a wide range of disabilities and needs, so whether you have a Special Educational Need or a more complex physical disability these sessions are perfect for your family. The sessions are open to families with children of all ages to come and enjoy some time together!”
Do your hydrotherapy pools have any particular benefits for disabled children and adults?"The benefits of hydrotherapy are wide ranging! The warm water is relaxing and can reduce pain and allow those with more physical disabilities to move more freely than they would do on land. If the sessions are used regularly muscles can increase in strength which may aid mobility once you're out of the water too."
“Along with the physical benefits of the warm water our sessions have less swimmers in the pool and our hydrotherapy pools are smaller than many local leisure centres. The environment is less busy than the larger leisure centres and we only have one session running at a time, so the changing rooms and communal areas are quieter too. There’s free parking onsite and family changing and the pools are fully accessible from the car park right through to the water so your visit can be as stress-free as possible. All of our sessions need to be booked in advance, so our team will be fully prepared for your visit, there’ll never be overcrowding and you’ll never arrive at the pool with the chance of being turned away”
How do I find out more?
"If you're interested in attending one of disability family sessions all you need to do is book online and come along. You'll be asked some questions about your needs so our team can be prepared for your visit. If you'd like to talk some more about your requirements you can contact the team at the pool in advance and they'll be happy to discuss what you need to help make your visit a pleasurable and stress-free experience."
How do I book?
“Before you attend the pool you’ll need to book and pay for your session in advance. When you arrive you’ll just need to give us your booking reference and you can come right in! We understand that sometimes circumstances mean you’re not able to attend, so if you need to move your booking to another date or time you can do this simply online or by calling the pool.”
