Why Hydrotherapy?

Why Hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy (sometimes called aquatic therapy) are water-based treatments and exercises designed to have therapeutic effects on a range of musculoskeletal and neural conditions. It’s often used in physical therapy. The treatments can be either warm or cold water, but here at Neptune Aquatic solutions we specialise in warm water therapy at our pools which are heated to a warm 33 degrees, the perfect temperature for warm water hydrotherapy!

In this blog our expert team discuss the benefits of hydrotherapy and what you can expect from one of our hydrotherapy sessions.

“There are a wide range of conditions which can benefit from hydrotherapy. However, whilst it’s proven to offer relief, access to pools offering this service can often be patchy. The NHS do operate some pools, and can offer treatment, but access is very varied and waiting lists can be prohibitive.”

David - Managing director, Neptune Aquatic solutions

Hydrotherapy can be used to provide relief from the following

  • Back pain

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Arthritis - both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

  • Neurological conditions including Muscular Dystrophy, Cerebral Palsy, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinsons Disease

  • Musculoskeletal conditions - such as frozen shoulder, ankle sprains and groin strains

  • Following surgery for conditions such as knee replacement, hip replacement, ACL reconstruction

  • Strokes or head injuries

The benefits of hydrotherapy are wide ranging, it’s even been shown to have an improvement on a patient’s mental health. The water provides a resistance allow muscles to be worked gently and allow a greater mobility than can be achieved in more traditional land based activities.

Some of the benefits hydrotherapy can provide are:

  • rain relief

  • reduced muscle spasms

  • increased range of motion for joints

  • strengthening of weak muscles.

  • increased circulation.

  • improvement of balance and coordination.

  • re-education of paralysed muscles.

  • relaxation

Our expert team describe what to expect from one of our Hydrotherapy sessions.

“We’re passionate about making access to this type of therapy available to everyone so you won’t need a medical referral, you don’t even have to be able to swim! All of our pools are fully accessible and our team are experienced with dealing with all abilities so we really are open to everyone. All you need to do is book your session online and answer a few medical questions then come along to the pool.”

David - managing director

"Our hydrotherapy sessions are designed for you to work at your own pace and complete your own exercises. You may like to work through a programme that you’ve been given by a physiotherapist or other healthcare professional. Or our expert team can help you to develop a personalised hydrotherapy plan designed just for you! The water can make you feel like you can do much more that you might not be capable on land, so it’s important to take it slowly and not push yourself too far”

Stuart - Starfish Hydrotherapy Pool

“Our customers often say that just being in the water helps them feel better! The warm water and calm environment helps them to feel relaxed and is great for well-being. Compared to larger leisure centre pools our hydrotherapy pools are a quieter environment and we limit the number of people in the water which keeps the sessions really friendly and relaxed. If you’d like to bring a healthcare specialist or a family member with you they’re more than welcome and will pay a reduced rate for the session.”

Marcus - Wyvern Hydrotherapy Pool
