Meet the team - Steve

Meet our Assistant Swim Coordinator and Swimming Teacher - Steve.

We'd like to introduce you to our Neptune Team, now it's the turn of Steve, our Assistant Swim Coordinator, Swim Teacher and Pool Supervisor.

What is your role at Neptune Aquatics?

I have three roles at Neptune, I'm the Assistant Swim Coordinator to Steph, our Director of Aquatics who makes sure Neptune Swim School runs so smoothly. As part of this role I organise all of Neptune's 1-1 and 1-2 swimming lessons for swimmers who, for whatever reason, would prefer personal tution to our small group lessons.

My favourite role is as a Swimming Teacher. I teach everyone from tiny babies in our parent and baby classes, to our dolphins and swordfish (who are our advanced swimmers) and even adults! I've been teaching swimming for many years and seeing the faces of the parents as they follow the progress of their children is priceless.

Finally I also work as a pool supervisor at Starfish Hydrotherapy Pool in Chippenham keeping parents and little one's safe during our Under 5's Swim Sessions. We all grade the noise level of the pool when the lights are turned off by the volume of the "ooooooh" that we get from the parents.

What is a typical day like for you?

My week at Neptune is really varied and never boring - which is one of the reasons why working here is so enjoyable! I spend two days in the office with the Neptune Management Team helping Steph with the vast amount of admin which comes with managing a swim school. We work hard, but always have time for cups of coffee and a laugh and a joke. On Tuesdays and Fridays I teach swimming at First Step in Corsham and on Sunday mornings at Starfish Hydrotherapy Pool. On Friday's you'll also see me as a pool supervisor during the Under 5's Swim at Starfish Hydrotherapy Pool.

What’s the best thing about your job?

The best part of my job is meeting new people and making a difference to their lives, whether it's seeing a child swim without floatation for the first time or helping an adult conquer their fear of the water. It's great to be part of a well run and professional team who strive every day to improve people's lives through all the different activities we offer as Neptune Aquatics. My mother-in-law has rheumatoid arthritis and is in constant pain. She's recently attended some sessions with Rory at Starfish Hydrotherapy Pool and we've really seen a massive improvement to her quality of life.

When you’re not teaching or in the office what do you like to get up to?

I've taken my passion for teaching young people in a different direction, and when I'm not in the water you'll find me helping people learn to Drive as an instructor with Red Driving school. I love all sport - football and boxing are my favourites. For me, spending time with my family is when I'm most content.

What do you think your colleagues would say about you?

I would like to think that they would find me warm, funny and hard working. Hopefully they'd say I'm reliable, and always there to offer help and advice. Being a small business we often need to be flexible and ready to pitch in with the rest of the team. They'd probably say I'm quite forgetful - I'm known for leaving things at the different sites I work at - such as water bottles, towels, ipads etc.

If you had a super-power what would it be?

I would like to have the power to cure cancer.

Why not say ‘hello’ to Steve the next time you see him and remind him to take all of his kit with him!
